We are Grant County, New Mexico citizens working alongside others in the state to focus public attention on the fact that steel-jaw leghold traps, steel-wire snares and other barbaric body-gripping animal traps are secreted all over the Gila National Forest and on other public lands in the state.

These traps are indiscriminate and unnecessarily cruel to
companion animals and endangered species, as well as to their intended victims.

We hope this public attention will lead to banning these traps from public lands.

Pets in the Gila National Forest

A frequent response by trappers to reports of dogs being caught and injured in steel-jaw leghold traps on public lands is that dogs are not allowed off-leash on such lands. (One implication being that the dog got what it deserved.) Read more >>

Silver City Town Council calls for ban on traps

The Silver City, New Mexico Town Council unanimously passed a resolution on February 23, 2010, that calls for the banning of cruel animal traps on public lands in New Mexico. The resolution also urges Congressman Harry Teague (D-NM-2) to support the Refuge from Cruel Trapping Act, H.R. 3710. Read more >>

Town of Silver City to vote on banning traps

2008-2009 New Mexico Trapping Report

In the 2008-2009 trapping season alone, 649 bobcats, 852 coyotes and 1,769 foxes were trapped in Grant County and the four counties that border Grant County. Statewide, 2,958 bobcats, 4,524 coyotes and 4,513 foxes lost their lives to traps. View Charts Here >>

Another Eagle Injured In Trap

Friday morning hit with a bang with a call about yet another adult Bald Eagle in a leg-hold trap set for a Coyote. This time it was an illegal trap set in a nearby county. The DNR Wardens and Biologist were called to investigate and found the Bald Eagle caught up in the trap. Read More >>

Indiana's "Penning" Perversion

"Penning" involves the trapping, trading and selling of live coyotes and foxes to hound hunting training facilities. The captured wild canids are then released into pens and used to "train" hunting dogs. Read More >>
