Many states have speed traps and tourist traps. In New Mexico, we have other kinds of traps hidden, unmarked and scattered across our public lands: Photo by Robert Lawton Hikers to the beautiful Gila National Forest and other public lands in New Mexico may encounter traps all year round. Trapping of various "protected" furbearing animals is permitted from September 1 through May 15. Trapping of non-protected furbearing animals, such as coyotes and skunks, is permitted year round. Please enjoy your visit to New Mexico’s wonderful public lands. But please also watch that your small children and pets don’t get snared in one of these barbaric animal traps. Please call the Governor of New Mexico (505-476-2200) and the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (505-476-8000) and politely tell them you do not want cruel traps on public lands in New Mexico. Also, you can contact the New Mexico Game Commissioners here. |
